Bella Hadid Wore a Sheer Dress Made of Pantyhose to Cannes

While she may be taking a step back from her modeling duties, Bella Hadid wasn’t going to let this year’s Cannes Film Festival happen without a major fashion moment. After wearing a set of gold lungs back in 2021, Hadid has proven to be one of the event’s biggest players—and she just proved that she hasn’t missed a beat.

Today, at the premiere of The Apprentice, she wore a completely sheer dress from Anthony Vaccarello’s Fall 2024 Saint Laurent collection. Like so many of the other pieces that walked the runway, her dress was entirely see-through and made of sheer, stretchy pantyhose material. She finished the look with Saint Laurent’s La Scandale wedge and wore her hair in a deep, Old Hollywood side part with perfectly polished waves.

The dress featured a halter neckline and a sheer bodice, but the thin material was ruched, knotted, and tucked along the model’s midsection before flowing into a midi-length pencil skirt that had visible seams and a thick hem.

Speaking about the collection back in February, when critics wondered exactly how a garment made of notoriously delicate hosiery material would work in the real world, Vaccarrello insisted that runway presentations were about fantasy, not reality.

“So much fashion, so many things that just look the same. I wanted to propose something that hadn’t been done before that would get me excited,” he said. “My job isn’t always to do something that’s real or realistic.”

Of course, what ends up in Saint Laurent boutiques may not be exactly like what Hadid wore. So, like the runway, her one-of-a-kind Cannes creation was simply to inspire, not for mere mortals to attempt.

“Don’t even ask me about production, I can’t tell you,” Vaccarrelo finished.

Earlier this weekend, Hadid strolled the streets of Cannes in a less-sheer but equally flirty minidress. The espresso-hued number had a structured, corset-inspired bodice, and she finished it with a camel-colored Prada handbag, proving that she’s all about easy, breezy, monochrome dressing when she’s soaking up the sun in the South of France.
